Bethlehem, 15.10.2009 - Opening doors of opportunity. The Government of Germany and UNDP inaugurate a school for the blind in Beit Jala
Salam Fayyad, the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, today opened a new school for the blind which was funded by a contribution of the Government of Germany, through its development bank KfW, and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, in cooperation with the National Society for the Visually Handicapped. The new school was constructed, with funds amounting to €354,000, to create a better environment for the education of blind children in the Bethlehem district as well as other neighboring cities and villages. Gaza, 12.10.2009 - UNDP Provides Hearing Aids for the Deaf The United Nations Development Programme has provided 181 hearing aids to poor deaf children in the Gaza Strip, it was announced today. The hearing aids were given to the Atfaluna Society for the Deaf in Gaza City. The United Arab Emirates donated $85,000 to fund the purchase which also included batteries.Hearing aids and their batteries were not permitted to enter the Gaza Strip by the Israeli authorities as part of their restrictions on goods entering Gaza. However, Israeli authorities have now allowed their transfer from Israel. We live in a highly mobile world, where migration is not only inevitable but also an important dimension of human development. Nearly one billion—or one out of seven—people are migrants.
Today marked an important step forward for children in the Terra Santa School as they celebrated the cornerstone laying ceremony for a multipurpose hall in the Jericho district. The project implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education by UNDP/PAPP, with a budget of US$454,612, is part of the Government of Italy’s support to the development of the education sector in the occupied Palestinian territory. Rehabilitation works on the Jericho Agro Industrial Road project commenced today. The project funded by the Government of Japan in the amount of US 1.596 million is the first phase of works slated to support the soon to be developed Agro Industrial Park project. The works are being implemented in partnership between (UNDP/PAPP) and the Municipality of Jericho. Rehabilitation works will include the rehabilitation of 1.8 km 18 meter wide road over a period of 3 months. It is anticipated that approximately 8,000 workdays will be generated thus providing short term employment opportunities for the residents of the Jordan Valley. Mr. Khaled Shahwan, UNDP Deputy Special Representative of Operations, accompanied by the Hospital head of the social department, visited the Haddasah Ein Karem hospital cancer clinic on Sunday 6th September, 2009. More than 60 MP3’s were distributed to hospitalized pediatric cancer and chronically ill children ranging in age from 4 weeks to 17 years old. This comes as part of UNDP’s donation of US$10,000 worth of gifts to children undergoing treatment for cancer. The gifts will go to around 250 children from Jerusalem, West Bank amd Gaza.
In Arab countries, a widespread lack of human security undermines human development, according to the Arab Human Development Report 2009: Challenges to Human Security in the Arab Countries. This report is prepared by independent scholars drawn from the region. The report argues that human security is a prerequisite for human development, and that the widespread absence of human security in Arab countries undermines people’s options. Human security refers not only to questions of survival, but also basic needs such as access to clean water and quality of life concerns. Human security in the Arab countries is often threatened by unjust political, social, and economic structures; by competition for power and resources among fragmented social groups; and, in some cases, by the impacts of external military intervention. Gaza, 09.07.2009 - UNDP begins removing rubble in the Gaza Strip
Contractors working for the United Nations today began clearing around 420,000 tonnes of rubble caused by Israeli bombing and fighting earlier this year. UNDP estimated that 15,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed between December 27 and January 18. Clearance and crushing will take one year and provide 200,000 days of work. The total cost of UNDP’s work is estimated at $12 million. Canada has provided $3.4 million and Sweden $2.3 million towards the cost and UNDP is in negotiations to fill the funding gap.
